Shark Conservation
- Currently the Sandoway Discovery Center has resident Nurse Sharks, Cownose Rays, and a Bat Ray on exhibit.
- Sharks, as top predator in the ocean, help control the numbers of other fish and animal species. If you remove all the sharks, the animal populations they feed on could potentially grow out of control and exhaust their food supply and die out.
- Millions of sharks are killed every year due to commercial fishing as bycatch. Bycatch are animals unintentionally caught in nets and on lines meant for tuna, swordfish, mahi and other desired fish species. By eating more responsible seafood, people can help affect the industry and potentially help save sharks and other bycatch animals. Check out this helpful link for a guide to responsible seafood.
